Google Business Profile
Straight answers about how Google Business Profiles work, how local ranking actually happens, and what results to realistically expect.
What is a Google Business Profile and why does it matter?
- A Google Business Profile is the free listing that controls how your business appears on Google Search and Google Maps — your name, photos, services, reviews, hours, and buttons to call or get directions. When someone searches for something like “dentist near me” or “car showroom Jalandhar”, Google shows a shortlist of businesses (the “map pack”) with maps above the regular website results.
- For local businesses it is usually the single highest-intent marketing channel: the person searching is nearby and ready to act, and the profile gives them one tap to call you, message you on WhatsApp, or walk in. An unclaimed or half-filled profile in that list loses customers to competitors who look more active and trustworthy.
How long does Google Business Profile optimization take to show results?
- Most businesses see measurable movement — more calls, direction requests and profile views — within 4 to 12 weeks of consistent optimization. Highly competitive categories or cities can take longer.
- The first step is always verification, which Google does by video, phone or postcard and can take up to two weeks. After that, ranking improves as Google gathers signals over time: new reviews, fresh photos, posts, and interactions on your profile. Anyone promising “page 1 in a week” is guessing; the profile compounds, it doesn't switch on overnight.
What actually affects local ranking on Google?
- Google itself says local ranking is based on three things: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how far you are from the searcher), and prominence (how well-known and well-reviewed your business is).
- Of these, you directly control relevance and prominence: choosing the right primary and secondary categories, filling every profile field, adding services and products, publishing posts and photos regularly, and earning genuine reviews steadily. Distance you cannot change — but a complete, active profile often beats a closer competitor with a neglected one.
I don't have a shop customers can visit. Can I still rank locally?
- Yes. Google supports “service-area businesses” — plumbers, consultants, agencies, caterers — that visit or deliver to customers rather than receiving them. You set up the profile with your service areas (cities or PIN codes) and hide your street address from the public listing.
- Verification is still required, and Google is stricter with these profiles, so the address you enter privately must be a real staffed location. Used correctly, service-area profiles rank across the areas you declare just like storefront profiles do.
How important are Google reviews, and how many do I need?
- Reviews are one of the strongest ranking and conversion signals: they affect prominence, they carry keywords customers type (“the dentist was great with kids”), and searchers read them before calling. There is no magic number — a steady flow of recent, genuine reviews matters more than a large total from years ago.
- The rules that matter: never buy or incentivise fake reviews (Google suspends profiles for it), ask at the moment of delight, and reply to every review — including critical ones. A calm, helpful reply to a bad review is public proof of how you treat customers.

Bulk WhatsApp, SMS & Email
What is allowed, what is not, and what the rules are in India — because non-compliant bulk messaging gets numbers banned and money wasted.
Is bulk WhatsApp messaging legal in India?
- Yes — when it is sent through the official WhatsApp Business Platform (API) to people who have opted in, using message templates approved by Meta. That is exactly how large banks, hospitals and retail chains message their customers on WhatsApp.
- What gets numbers banned is the other route: uploading purchased or scraped lists into unofficial “bulk sender” tools. WhatsApp detects abnormal sending patterns and permanently bans those numbers, often with the business's whole customer chat history lost. Compliance is not paperwork — it is what keeps your channel alive.
What is the difference between the WhatsApp Business app and the WhatsApp Business API?
- The free WhatsApp Business app runs on one phone. It is fine for day-to-day chats with a small customer base, but broadcasts reach only 256 contacts at a time, there is no template approval, and everything depends on one handset staying online.
- The WhatsApp Business Platform (API) is the official bulk channel: it sends to thousands of customers programmatically, uses pre-approved templates, supports catalogs, buttons, automated replies and chatbots, and comes with delivery and read reporting. It is the only dependable way to run real campaigns on WhatsApp — and the only one that won't get your number banned.
What are the rules for bulk SMS in India?
- Bulk SMS in India is regulated by TRAI. Every business must register on a DLT (Distributed Ledger Technology) platform, register its sender ID (the 6-letter name people see, like LM-HDFCBK) and get every message template approved before sending. We handle this registration as part of campaign setup.
- Promotional SMS can only be delivered between 9 AM and 9 PM, and never to numbers registered on the DND (Do Not Disturb) list. Transactional messages — OTPs, order updates, appointment reminders — have separate, more flexible routes. Sending outside these rules gets your sender ID blocked, which is why template discipline matters.
Do I need consent before messaging customers?
- Yes. For WhatsApp, Meta requires documented opt-in before you message someone. For SMS and email, Indian law and the IT Act require consent for commercial communication, and every message must carry a working opt-out.
- In practice this means: collect consent at the point of sale, on your website form, or via a missed-call/WhatsApp join flow; keep a record of who consented and when; and honour opt-outs immediately. A smaller, consenting list consistently outperforms a large bought one — in deliverability, replies and trust.
Why do my bulk emails land in spam — and how is that fixed?
- The usual causes: the sending domain has no authentication records (SPF, DKIM, DMARC), the list contains old or unengaged addresses, the subject line trips spam filters, or one sender sends sudden large volumes from a cold domain.
- The fixes are the same across providers: authenticate your domain, warm up sending volume gradually, clean the list (remove bounces and people who never open), send relevant content to segments rather than everyone at once, and make unsubscribing one click. Inbox placement is earned, not bought.

Websites
What a small-business website should cost, how long it takes, and what actually turns visitors into enquiries.
How much does a website cost in India?
- For a small business, a professional 5–10 page website typically costs between Rs 10,000 and Rs 50,000 in India. Below that range you are usually getting a recycled template with your logo pasted on; above it you are paying for custom features — booking systems, payment gateways, portals.
- What moves the price: number of pages, custom design vs. template, whether content and photography exist or must be created, e-commerce, and integrations like WhatsApp chat, enquiry routing or analytics. At CDN Technologies, custom websites start from Rs 10,000 with the essentials included — mobile-first build, enquiry forms, click-to-call and WhatsApp buttons, and local SEO foundations.
How long does it take to build a small-business website?
- A 5–10 page business website typically takes 2 to 4 weeks from kickoff to launch — provided content (text, photos, logo) is ready. The slowest part of most projects is not the build; it is gathering and approving content.
- A realistic sequence: one week for content and structure, one to two weeks for design and build, then a few days for review, speed testing and launch. Anything sold as “live in 48 hours” means a template with placeholder text.
I already have a Google Business Profile. Do I really need a website?
- Yes — they do different jobs. The profile is how people find you and decide to click or call; the website is where they become convinced. A profile without a website also ranks lower over time, because Google treats the site as a trust signal and it gives you pages to match every service you offer.
- The pair works as a system: the profile wins the search, the website wins the enquiry. Even a focused 5-page site dramatically outperforms “just a phone number on the listing” when someone is comparing two businesses.
What makes a website actually convert visitors into enquiries?
- Five things, in order of impact: speed (visitors leave in seconds if a page stalls), one obvious next step on every screen, your phone number and WhatsApp button visible without scrolling, proof that you are real (photos of your work, reviews, full address), and forms that ask for as little as possible — name, contact, need.
- Most small-business websites fail not on looks but on friction: a “Contact us” page buried in the menu, forms asking for ten fields, and no indication of price or area served. Remove those and the same traffic produces more enquiries.
Will my website show up on Google by itself?
- Not by itself — publishing a website only makes it eligible to appear. Showing up requires the basics: pages written around what customers actually search, proper titles and descriptions, a sitemap submitted to Google Search Console, fast mobile loading, and links from real places such as your Google Business Profile and local directories.
- Then it takes time: new pages typically take weeks to start ranking for their main terms, longer in competitive cities. A website with strong local SEO foundations plus an active Google Business Profile is the fastest realistic path for a local business.
